About Us

Welcome to the Adultliteracy@creclsrv.org discussion list, a service of the Capitol Region Education Council in partnership with the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The list is moderated by George Demetrion, Adjunct Staff in the Community Education Division of CREC.

The purpose of Adultliteracy@creclsrv.org is to provide ongoing professional development in all aspects of adult literacy teaching, including, but not limited to reading, writing, numeracy, ESL, citizenship, curriculum development, and specialized topics like workplace, health, family, and civics literacy. The range of topics encouraged includes, but is not limited to methods, approaches, and teaching strategies, materials, group and classroom dynamics, and theory.

This discussion list is a place to ask questions, share resources, and discuss issues, including courteous probing of different points of view.

Guidelines
• You may wish to introduce yourself to other list members when posting to the list for the first time.
• Please include your name, contact information, and program or affiliation which will better allow others to respond to your message as they some may want to contact you off-line.
• Be as concise as possible, but give your message the time it deserves.
• For longer messages consider sending a Part I and Part II in two separate postings.
• Before you send a reply, consider whether it should go to everyone on the list or just to the person posting the message. If you think your reply will be of general interest, then send it to the list; if not, be careful to reply only to the message originator. When replying to an individual, make sure that person's email address is the only one appearing in the “To box."
• When you are replying to a posted message, it helps readers if you quote the part of the message (usually not the whole message) that you are replying to. All list readers will then respond to your message in the proper context. If the message thread gets too long, remove the older postings at the beginning of the thread.
• If you are responding to a posting but want to change the topic of a discussion thread, remember to change the subject line in the email to give members information about the new direction in the conversation.
• Email messages typed in all capitals are considered shouting and in discussion forums are considered rude, so please be considerate and for emphasis use *emphasis* or _emphasis_ instead of all capitals.
• Comments made in jest on a mailing list may not always appear that way to other readers. Sarcasm rarely works on the internet and is often misunderstood. Please be careful using humor on the lists.
• All messages posted are publically accessible and are retrievable in archival format. Before you send the message to the list, review your message and make sure that it represents what you want to see in a public format.
• Messages are reviewed by the moderator before they are placed on the list. In the vast majority of cases the they will go out as sent. In some cases in order to assure greater clarity or relevance, you may be encouraged to rephrase a portion of your message.
• Such “intrusion” will be a very light touch as the purpose of this list is to stimulate highly interested dialogue on all phases of adult literacy instruction.
